Rode the bike home about 80 miles on the motorway ran perfectly but when I came to the city she kept cutting out at lights have to keep it revving or pull out choke to keep it going but then it revving fierce high. Tried adjusting the idle knob but no joy, it either revs too high or cuts out.

You probably have the idle

You probably have the idle cuircuit gummed up in your carbs and possibly air leaks. Check if the airfilter boots are tight on the carbs. Check the condition of the airfilter. As for the carbs, if you are lucky a couple of bottles of seafoam ran through the tank may fix this. Otherwise I would recommend thoroughly cleaning the carbs. Preferably by complete dissasembly and dipping in a parts cleaner overnight. Spraying the insides with a can of carb cleaner won't do much.

cheers mate will give this a

cheers mate will give this a go just bought a service manuel off ebay so once it arrives I'll get to work

I'd put money on the carb

I'd put money on the carb float valves leaking, it's a very common problem on the GPZ 1100 and is usually caused by rust inside the fuel tank. If that's what the problem is you'd probably want to fix it ASAP as the whole motor can end up full of petrol ... it happened to mine and 3 others that I know of.
